It’s cold outside, snow is falling, and people are preparing for Christmas Eve… it’s Christmas time! 
Not only in Germany but also in Ireland Christmas is the most important celebration of the year.
At Christmas time a lot of people visit Christmas markets. One of the biggest German Christmas markets with two million visitors is the “Nuernberger Christkindlesmarkt”. It’s not only famous in Germany but it’s also one of the most famous in the world! Furthermore the “Striezelmarkt” with 2, 5 million visitors every year is also one of the biggest in Germany. It’s famous for a typical German Christmas specialty, the “Dresdner Stollen”, a cake with raisins and a lot of icing sugar. You can find the recipe here.
All German Christmas fairs offer almost the same goods like hot spiced wine, candles, toys for children and Christmas tree ornaments. On the contrary Irish Christmas markets still offer nowadays local products like butter, eggs and poultry. Big and famous Christmas markets are located in Dublin, Belfast and Derry. Dublin is famous for delicacies and wool, Belfast for seasonal delicacies and Derry offers jewellery and glassware.
Many Germans and Irish prefer having a Christmas crib, buying a Christmas tree and hanging ornaments on it. For the Irish it’s typical to hang a mistletoe over the entrance door which is a symbol for luck and blessing. If a man meets a woman under a mistletoe, he has to kiss her.
Both Germans and the Irish decorate their houses with many lights.
In Germany Christmas presents will be opened on the 24th of December, in Ireland they will not be opened until the 25th of December. The Irish celebrate the St. Stephens Day the 26th of December.
For Christmas dinner a lot of Germans eat goose or duck whereas the Irish eat crabs, turkey and plum pudding. This Christmas pudding is a type of pudding traditionally served on Christmas Day. You can find the recipe here.

Weihnachten in Deutschland und Irland: Wunderschoene Weihnachtszeit! 
Draussen ist es kalt, Schnee faellt, die Menschen bereiten sich auf den Weihnachtsabend vor… das ist die Weihnachtszeit!
Nicht nur in Deutschland sondern auch in Irland ist Weihnachten das wichtigste Fest.
In der Weihnachtszeit besuchen viele Menschen Weihnachtsmaerkte. Einer der groessten mit zwei Millionen Besuchern ist der Nuernberger Christkindlesmarkt. Er ist nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern auch auf der ganzen Welt bekannt! Der Striezelmarkt mit 2, 5 Millionen Besuchern pro Jahr ist auch einer der groessten Deutschlands. Er ist fuer die deutsche Weihnachtsspezialitaet, den Dresdner Stollen, beruehmt. Dies ist ein Kuchen mit Rosinen und viel Puderzucker. Hier das Rezept:
Waehrend die deutschen Weihnachtsmaerkte vor allem Gluehwein, Kerzen, Kinderspielzeug und Christbaumschmuck anbieten, sind auf den irischen auch heutzutage noch lokale Erzeugnisse wie Butter, Eier und Gefluegel zu finden. Grosse und bekannte Weihnachtsmaerkte sind in Dublin, Belfast und Derry. In Dublin findet man vor allem Delikatessen und Wollwaren, in Belfast saisonale Spezialitaeten und auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt in Derry werden Schmuck und Glaswaren angeboten.
Viele Deutsche und Iren haben eine Weihnachtskrippe und einen Weihnachtsbaum, an den sie Christbaumschmuck haengen. Bei den Iren ist es typisch einen Mistelzweig ueber die Eingangstuer zu haengen, der ein Symbol fuer Glueck und Segen darstellt. Wenn ein Mann einer Frau unter einem Mistelzweig begegnet, muss er sie kuessen.
Sowohl Deutsche als auch Iren dekorieren ihre Haeuser mit vielen Lichtern.
Die Weihnachtsgeschenke werden in Deutschland am 24. Dezember geoeffnet, in Irland erst am 25. Dezember. Am 26. Dezember feiern die Iren den St. Stephens Day.
An Weihnachten essen viele Deutsche Gans oder Ente, wobei hingegen die Iren Krabben, Truthahn und Plumpudding essen. Der Weihnachtspudding ist ein traditioneller Pudding, der an Weihnachten serviert wird. Hier das Rezept:
