Like almost all Northern European countries, colored eggs are used here also to symbolize Spring. In fact, in a perfect mix of religion and secularism, chocolate eggs are brought to the church to be blessed by the priest. The Easter period begins with Palm Sunday. In these days, it’s common for people to prepare for the Easter celebrations by doing a ‘Spring Clean’ in the house. Traditionally, the menu in this period is limited to fish and no alcohol in order to do penance before indulging at Easter! The pubs are closed during Good Friday (even if this tradition is changing somewhat nowadays) and it is considered a day of rest. People also choose to go to church on this day. On Easter Saturday, the food is prepared in advance of the celebratory lunch the following day, because on Sunday morning the Irish have a date with the sun… The most faithful will climb a hill on Easter Sunday morning as a symbol of getting close to the sky and watch the so-called “Sundance on Easter”: the sun rises to celebrate the resurrection of Christ and perform a dance in the morning sky… And despite the proverbial climate change in Ireland, they say that this suggestive show is realized every year!
